Upcoming SmartNet Events - What managers can learn from comedians

Terry Williams

Terry Williams strongly believes that managers can use comedians' techniques to increase productivity and improve attitudes in their teams.

Terry is convinced because he has directly experienced the benefits of using comedians techniques' and humour. In addition to being a full-time manager, Terry is also a stand-up comedian. Terry altered the techniques that he, and other comedians, were using and applied them to management.

In particular, Terry focused on the way he spoke to his team. Research indicates that managers spend 78% of their time speaking and humour helps people understand and remember information.

Additional research shows that humour makes individuals more open and teams more cohesive. Individuals who experience humour are able to think flexibly, adapt, take chances, be creative and embrace new ideas and methods. At a group level, teams that practice humour have better morale and are more productive. In addition, teams members who enjoy team interaction are less likely to be distracted or absent from work.
