Dr Richard Mander

  • In 2008 Richard returned to Seattle to lead a startup.

  • In 2004 Richard moved from Seattle to New Zealand to take up a role as Chief Technology Officer of Navman. He then became Chief Executive Officer of HumanWare. In 2007 Richard was awarded the Company Leader award at the 2007 New Zealand Hi-Tech Awards and HumanWare won the Corporate Award as a company which had attained maturity and sustained growth in the high tech sector, showing above average financial performance, substantial global market presence, and good corporate citizenship.

  • In 2004 Richard was named the World Class New Zealander of the Year which is awarded annually to a New Zealander making an outstanding contribution to New Zealand's economic development. This award recognized Richard's effort in helping New Zealand ICT companies better understand how to make their products succeed in the global markets.

  • Richard has won a number of design and technology awards including: MacUser Best Technology, Codie, New Media Web.

  • Richard holds seven patents in emerging technologies relating to interaction design and new media.

  • His Seattle-based consultancy Zanzara helps companies design their products and rapidly bring them to market.

  • Richard earned his Ph.D. from Stanford University.

  • Richard is a New Zealander.

HumanWare designs and manufactures electronic devices for blind, low vision, and learning disabled people. Navman - Chief Technology Officer

Pro-Bono Work

Over the years, Richard has found it rewarding to give something back to the community, by helping worthy causes for free (pro-bono) or by providing services at reduced rates to selected non-profit organisations.

· Philanthropy Catalogue: As a pro-bono project, Zanzara designed a print catalog and website for the Whatcom Philanthropy Catalogue - a project to promote philanthropy in Whatcom County, Washington State.

· Northwest Development Center: Zanzara developed initial identity materials, a website, and promotional materials for a group seeking to develop the Northwest Development Center - an educational center in Bellingham featuring the unique ecosystems of the Pacific Northwest.

· Northwest Ecosystem Alliance: Zanzara developed all the marketing and promotional materials for the Northwest Ecosystem Alliance's highly successful program to raise money for its projects. Additionally, Zanzara developed all the marketing materials, a website, and other collateral for the Cascade's Conservation Partnership campaign.

· The Tree Project: An exhibit at The Whatcom Museum, by Wesley Smith and Andrew Vallee, presented an 118 year old Maple tree as an installation piece, furniture, art, a history of logging practices, and as a promotion of sustainable forestry. As a pro-bono project Zanzara designed the exhibition catalogue, promotional materials, selected displays, and an exhibit website.

· Asian Art Museum of San Francisco: While at Apple, Richard partnered with the museum to develop an extensive website for the exhibit 'Genghis Kahn', this made extensive use of QuickTime VR and provided the museum with its first online virtual exhibit.
